There are always sweet dishes to celebrate Krishna Janma Utsav. I started my preparation with these “Nei Appam” , a popular dish in Kerala. This Nei Appam Recipe is a keeper.

Today we are celebrating the festival of “Janmasthami” as birthday of Krishna. Krishna was born on this day in Mathura. We are inspired by the story year after year. The town of Dwaraka in Gujarat, comes alive with celebrations as hordes of visitors flock to the town.
Nei Appam Recipe
Link to the original recipe is here, my friend Priya Shiva’s blog. But I have used very little jaggery in my recipe compared to the original. You may increase the Jaggery amount up to 1 cup.
Instructions
- Soak rice with fenugreek seeds, urad dal for 2 hours. Make a batter adding jaggery powder ,banana to it. Use very little water as we need a thick batter.
- Leave it for 3-4 hours for fermentation at room temperature. Just before making appams, add chopped coconut to the batter.
- Now heat the paniyaram pan ,add 2 tsp ghee to each partition.
- Pour the batter in each partition & cook it on low flame.
- Cook for few minutes and then turn it with a stick to cook the other side.
- Remove it from the paniyaram pan once it turn golden brown. Follow the same step for the whole batter. Serve warm or cold.
